Stoddard

Stoddard 712
Stoddard, Wisconsin, is a village in Vernon County along state highway 35 and the Mississippi River about 10 miles south of La Crosse. It has about 840 residents.

It is named for Colonel S. Stoddard, one-time mayor of La Crosse.

Interestingly, the Mississippi was originally a mile west of the settlement. However, when Lock and Dam #8 was built about 6 1/2 miles downstream, the water level increased and flooded the lowlands between the town and the river.
