Manitowoc, 25 miles northwest of
Sheboygan, 25 miles northeast of
Fond du Lac, and 30 miles southeast of
Appleton. It has about 3100 residents.
The early settlers came from the Schleswig-Holstein area of Germany. They first called the settlement Altona (reason unknown), but when they learned of the similarity to Altoona (near Eau Claire), they changed it to New Holstein.
