Appleton, Wisconsin, is mostly where I grew up. My family lived there for all but 2 of my younger years. My parents continued to live there after I moved away. My maternal grandparents lived just outside of Appleton in the town of Grand Chute all that time and before.
Appleton is located along the Fox River just north of Lake Winnebago mostly in Outagamie County. Two small sections spill over into Calumet and Winnebago counties. It's the largest of the "Fox Cities" in the area with about 75,000 residents.
Green Bay is about 30 miles to the northeast.
Many highways criss-cross the Appleton area. I-41 makes a major turn bending around the northwest corner of the city (and going right past my grandparent's land). Other significant roads include state highways 47, 96, 125 (College Ave.), 441, and the nearby state Highway 10.
Appleton is home to Lawrence University, named for financial backer Amos A. Lawrence. His father-in-law, Samuel Appleton, donated $10,000 to the college library, so the town took his name in appreciation.
I could go on, but the
Appleton Wikipedia article has a good summary of Appleton's highlights for those who are interested in more information.
