Fond du Lac, Wisconsin, is located in Fond du Lac County at the south end of Lake Winnebago. Several significant highways run through the area: I-41, US Highways 45 and 151, and state highway 23. The city has about 44,700 residents.
The Menominee called the village Wanikamiu meaning "end of lake". The French used similar thinking in naming it Fond du Lac which means "end or foot of the lake", "bottom of the lake", or "that part of the lake which is farthest, most remote" - all in reference to its position relative to Lake Winnebago.
