Nekoosa, Wisconsin, is a city in Wood County along the Wisconsin River at the intersection of state highways 73 and 173 a few miles southwest of Wisconsin Rapids (with only Port Edwards in between). It has about 2400 residents.
It was first called Point Basse or Point Boss after a Mr. Basse who was often called the Boss. It was later renamed for the Winnebago word meaning "running water" or "swift water" for the rapids on the river.
