Merrimac

Merrimac 839
Merrimac, Wisconsin, is a village in Sauk County along state highway 113 on Lake Wisconsin, part of the Wisconsin River, about 35 miles northwest of Madison. (It would be closer, but you have to get across the river.) It has about 440 residents.

The settlement was first called Matt's Ferry after Chester Mattson. The first post office was named Colomar after the postmaster general of the day, but folks continued to call it Matt's Ferry. J. G. Train named it Merrimack after the county and river in New Hampshire. The trailing "k" was later dropped.
