Marshall, Wisconsin, is a village in Dane County along state highway 19 about 20 miles northeast of Madison. It has about 4000 residents.

The original settlement became known as Bird's Ruins after A. A. Bird's and Zenas Bird's (and a Mr. Petrie's) constructions were destroyed in a prairie fire. Next it was named Hanchettville for A. M. Hanchett, the first postmaster. Then it became Howard City in honor of someone related to the railroad. Finally it was named Marshall after Samuel Marshall, who is also known for founding the Marshall & Illsley Bank (M&I Bank) in Madison.
