Lac du Flambeau, Wisconsin, is located in Vilas County along state highway 47 about 38 miles northwest of Rhinelander. It completely surrounds or nearly encompasses the cluster of Flambeau Lake, Long Interlaken Lake, Moss Lake, and Pokegama Lake. It has a population of over 1800 people. It was named by French traders who saw Chippewa Indians fishing from their canoes at night by the light of torches. Lac du Flambeau means "lake of the flaming torches".
