Fox Lake

Fox Lake 734
Fox Lake 841

Fox Lake, Wisconsin, is a city in Dodge County along state highway 33 about halfway between Portage to the west and Fond du Lac to the northeast.

The origin of the name is muddled. According to Wikipedia, it either comes from a Winnebago Indian named Big Fox or the English translation of the Indian name. But the same article says the translation is "good land". Hm.

Then there's this quotation from The Romance of Wisconsin Place Names.
The Indian name for the lake [Fox Lake] was Hos-a-rac-ah-tah meaning "fox," or perhaps "fish spear." It was corrupted into the word Waushara. Jacob Brower, the first settler who arrived in 1838 was told the Indian word meant Fox Lake, so he platted the land under that name. The Hamilton Stevens family bought adjoining land and platted it as the Village of Waushara. There was some confusion until 1850 when the Stevens family moved away, and Fox Lake became the name of the entire settlement.
