Embarrass, Wisconsin, is located in Waupaca County along state highway 22 about 40 miles west-northwest of Green Bay. It has about 370 residents.
The village is name for the Embarrass River, for which there are two stories about its origin - one more likely than the other.
The French who sent logs down the river found it very difficult to do so because of all the snags along the way. The French word meaning to impede, obstruct, or entangle is embarrase.
Another tale from a Clintonville newspaper say that settlers(?) "came to this shallow, easily forded stream at mid-day on the Embarrass River. We decided to call it Embarrass because we could [ahem] see its bottom."
You be the judge.
