Elroy, Wisconsin, is located in Juneau County along state highway 82 about 35 miles (by road) southeast of Sparta. It is probably best known as one terminus of the Elroy-Sparta State Trail, which is just 32.5 miles long. About 1300 people reside in the city.

The origins of the name are confused. It seems that it was originally supposed to be called LeRoy, possibly after a place in Scotland or after LeRoy, New York, as suggested by James Madison Brintnall. In any case, that name was already taken, so Brintnall's daughter, Lydia (possibly) suggested switching the first two letters around. Or Brintnall may have suggested Ell Roy, possibly after a place in Scotland.
