De Soto 712 |
De Soto, Wisconsin, is located on state highway 35 on the Mississippi River about halfway between La Crosse to the north and Prairie du Chien to the south. It lies in both Vernon and Crawford counties and has a population of about 280.
The village was originally called Winneshiek's Landing after a Winnebago Indian chief. Later, Formora and Formosa were considered, but it was eventually renamed after Hernando De Soto, the first Spaniard to see the Mississippi.
