Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin, is a city in Crawford County on the Mississippi River where US Highway 18 and state highways 35 and 27 meet. It is just north of the confluence of the Wisconsin River and the Mississippi. It has about 5500 residents.
Nicolas Perrot first called it Fort St. Nicolas. Fort Shelby and Fort Crawford were also located here. Prairie du Chien was named for the Fox Chief Alim, which is Dog in English and Chien in French. The French called the place Dog Prairie or Prairie du Chien.
