Butler, Wisconsin, is surrounded by
Menomonee Falls (north and northwest),
Milwaukee (northeast), Wauwatosa (southeast), and
Brookfield (south and southwest) in Waukesha County. It lies just west of I-41 and north of state highway 190 (Capitol Drive).
Between the village and I-41 are railroad yards (still used today) that were created to relieve the congestion of those found in Milwaukee. They were called New Butler, probably after William Butler. The adjacent community was settled by 200 railroad workers and their families in 1913. The "New" portion of the name was dropped in 1926.
