Milwaukee, Wisconsin, is the largest city in the state and a major port on Lake Michigan. It occupies most of Milwaukee County. As you might expect, several major highways run through or to it: I-41, I-43, I-94, US Highways 41 (same as I-41), 45, and 18, and state highways 32, 57, 181, 145, 175, 190, 59, 24, 36, and 100 (often Mayfair Rd.). There are about 577,000 residents in the City of Milwaukee proper.
The name obviously has Indian roots, but no one can decide which root is the correct one. Over the years, it has been spelled Milwauki, Millewacki, Milwahkie, Milwalky, and Milwaukie. The current spelling was settled on by 1884.
And then there's the precancel (which I do not own) on which it is misspelled Mikwaukee.
