Almena

Almena 728
Almena, Wisconsin, is on US Highway 8 about 30 miles east of St. Croix Falls, which is on the Mississippi River in the northwest section of the state. Almena is the eastern terminus of the Cattail Trail which runs to Avery about 20 miles to the west-southwest. Today, Almena hosts about 640 residents.

When you put Albert and Wilhelmena together, you get Almena...sorta. At least, those were the names of two of the original settlers - the Koehlers - who lent their names to this village in Barron County, Wisconsin. They originally thought to name the place Lightning City - after Lightning Creek, which today runs through the northern part of Almena.
