Wausau, Wisconsin, is a city in Marathon County located where US Highway 51 and state highways 29 and 52 meet. (I-39 ends just south of town.) It lies about 30 miles north of Stevens Point and has about 40,000 residents.
It was first called Big Bull Flats or Big Bull Falls for the roaring of the rapids on the Wisconsin River. It was changed to Wausau from the Ojibwe waasa meaning "faraway place".
