Oshkosh, Wisconsin, is a city in Winnebago County on the western shore of Lake Winnebago. I-41, US Highway 45, and state highways 21, 44, and 76 run through the area. It has about 66,800 residents.
The original settlement was called Athens. It was renamed for Chief Oskosh (original spelling with accent on the 2nd syllable). Sometime later the other "h" was added to create Oshkosh, and the accent was put on the 1st syllable.
