Kaukauna, Wisconsin, is a city in Outagamie and Calumet counties about 8 miles east of Appleton along the Fox River with Little Chute, Kimberly, and Combined Locks in between. I-41 and state highways 55 and 96 run through the town. It has a population of about 17,000.
The Menominee Indian word okakaning, or just kakaning, means "place where they fish for pike or pickerel," or "long portage," or "crow nesting place." (Quite the flexible word.) It's what they called the rapids on the Fox and what evolved into Kaukauna.
