Colby 701 |
Colby, Wisconsin, is indeed the home of Colby cheese which was first created there by Joseph Steinwand in 1874. The city lies on state highway 13 in Clark and Marathon counties. It's just south of highway 29 and is adjacent to Abbotsford to the north. The population is about 1900.
The area was first known as Section 53 (perhaps a railroad designation) and was named for Gardner L. Colby and his son Charles L. Colby. (They had nothing to do with the cheese.)
