Bear Creek 853

Bear Creek, Wisconsin, probably refers to the village in Outagamie County. (There are towns / townships with the same name elsewhere in the state.) It is located on state highway 76, just east of US Highway 45, about 10 miles north of New London.

Captain Welcome Hyde first settled the area as a lumber camp. It was named for the nearby stream. In 1898, it was renamed Welcome after Captain Hyde. The name reverted to Bear Creek in 1915 to avoid confusion caused by the village and the nearby railroad station having different names. Bear Creek has about 440 residents.
