The area around Bayfield, Wisconsin, used to be called La Pointe. Today, La Pointe is a place on Madeleine Island, which is a short distance from Bayfield in Lake Superior. Bayfield is technically a city along state highway 13, though if it were first to come into existence today, it would have to incorporate as a village. It is the smallest city, with a population of about 580, in Wisconsin.
Bayfield was named for Henry W. Bayfield, a surveyor. Bayfield is known as the Gateway to the Apostle Islands. When it holds its annual Apple Fest, the population can swell to 60,000.
