According to the
Village of Athens' website, the place was originally named Black Creek Falls. (Black Creek does run through the village.) In 1890, it was renamed by a Mr. Strupp for the city in Greece.
Athens, Wisconsin, with a population of almost 1100, is located in Marathon County along state highway 97 about 25 miles northwest of
Wausau. A few miles to the southeast is a historical marker showing the point that is 45 degrees north of the equator and 90 degrees west of the Prime Meridian. The postal address of this marker has an Athens address.
