Ashland, Wisconsin, lies on the shores of Chequamegon Bay which is part of Lake Superior. Virtually all of the city is in Ashland County, but a tiny portion near JFK Memorial Airport is in Bayfield County - probably for legal/safety reasons.
The city was first named Whittlesey, in honor of its first postmaster, Adolph Whittlesey. Then it became Bay City, and then St. Mark - after the basilica in Venice.Martin Beaser finally named it Ashland after Henry Clay's residence outside Lexington, Kentucky.
Ashland is home to about 7900 people, making it a major city in northern Wisconsin. US Highway 2 and state highway 13 intersect in the city.
