Amherst lies along US Highway 10 in Portage County about 15 miles east-southeast of Stevens Point in central Wisconsin. (Nearby to the northwest is Amherst Junction.) The village became Amherst in 1853 when Adam Uline, who had been born in Amherst, Nova Scotia, suggested it be given the name in honor of British General Jeffrey Amherst. Today, Amherst has just over 1000 residents.
