If you go almost due east from Green Bay for about 30 miles, you'll come to Algoma, Wisconsin, on the shores of Lake Michigan in Kewaunee County.

Algoma was founded in 1834 by Joseph McCormick. By 1851, settlers called it Wolf River, but in 1859 the name was changed to Ahnapee, the Indian word for "land of the great gray wolf". In 1897 or 1899 (depending on your source), it was renamed again to the present-day Algoma, which may mean "park of flowers"...or any of several other things.

The 3000 or so people who live there today reside at the intersection of state highways 54 (to Green Bay) and 42 (to Sturgeon Bay to the north and Kewaunee to the south).
