Washington Island 714 |
Washington Island, Wisconsin, is the largest island located off the tip (to the northeast) of the Door Peninsula. It is only accessible from mainland Wisconsin by boat. There is no city or village called "Washington Island". The town(ship) of Washington Island includes the main island as well as Plum, Detroit, Hog, Rock, Pilot, and Fish islands. The population of the main island is about 700.
It was named for the flagship of Colonel Miller's fleet, which was, in turn, named after President George Washington.
