South Wayne

South Wayne 471
South Wayne, Wisconsin, is a village in Lafayette County along state highway 11 about 15 miles west of Monroe. It has about 475 residents.

The origin of the name is rather complicated. It was first called just Wayne for Anthony Wayne. The post office itself had the same name, but that later changed to Spafford. Then the railroad came and a depot was built (about a mile from Spafford) which was called Collins Station for a railroad worker. The post office moved there and was called Collins. The residents of Wayne thought it should be called Wayne, but by this time there already was a Wayne (between Fond du Lac and Milwaukee), so South was added to the name of this village.

To be clear, South Wayne actually is farther south in the state than Wayne - farther west too, but also farther south. Perhaps Southwest Wayne would have been better.
