Racine, Wisconsin, is a city in Racine County located along Lake Michigan where state highways 11, 20, 31, 32, and 38 meet. It has about 77,800 residents.
The Root River empties into Lake Michigan here. The Jesuit St. Cosme named the settlement Racine, which is French for "root". Captain Gilbert Knapp named it Port Gilbert for a time but later had it revert to Racine.
