Eau Claire, Wisconsin, lies mostly in Eau Claire County and a little in Chippewa County. I-94, US Highways 12 and 53, and state highways 37 and 93 all pass through the city. (State highway 29 runs just north of town.) Eau Claire has about 70,000 residents. It is adjoined by
Altoona, Seymour, and Lake Halle.
Chippewa Falls lies on the other side of Lake Halle, making this one large metro area.
Eau Claire is French for "clear water" which is a reference to the clarity of the water after the Eau Claire River joins the Chippewa River, both of which run through the city. For a time, the city was known both as Eau Claire and Clearwater.
